A freaking helicopter on a yacht. Seeing a helicopter parked on a yacht with my own eyes, my mind was blown.
It was about 6 months before I would sit for my CISSP exam.
My job had sent a bunch of us engineers over to Italy and France for a team kickoff event. We flew into Italy, stayed 1 night to explore the city, and then drove to France the next day. The company kickoff lasted 5 days, and we then decided to drive back to Italy. On the way, we stopped at the Principality of Monaco. If you haven’t heard of Monaco, it is where the rich and famous go to spend more cash in 1 day than I would earn in 5 years.
We were kind of lost in the city driving around, and decided to park our rental car and walk around. The streets were filled with nothing but Bentleys, Rolls Royce, Ferraris and Lambourghinis. I had never seen so much wealth!
But what really stood out to me, was this one yacht. When I got closer, I saw that it had a helicopter on it! The story was that these billionaires docked with their yachts, then instead of walking or driving to the hotel like the rest of us, they took their helicopter.
Sure enough, when we toured around the expensive hotels, there were big “H” letters in various areas for the helicopters to land.
I had found a strong motivating factor. I convinced myself that if I passed the CISSP exam, I would one day be able to afford a helicopter on a yacht. I didn’t know how, and I didn’t know why. But I just had a huge desire to believe that if I became CISSP, my network security career would lead to a fabulous life. Maybe it was just another pressure point my brain needed in order to come out of that exam room a CISSP, I don’t know. All I knew was that after I passed the exam on the first try, I came home and looked up how much it costs to rent a yacht, or a helicopter ride. After passing, you start to think anything is possible!
